“The Atonement”

In this sermon, Pastor Albert N. Martin introduces the doctrine of the Atonement by providing a comprehensive bibliography of recommended books for deeper study. He emphasizes the importance of these resources for preachers, teachers, and humble saints seeking to understand God's mind on this glorious doctrine. Martin also includes a pastoral application, encouraging church members and deacons to support their pastors by providing book allowances, enabling them to acquire resources that will feed their souls and, in turn, equip them to feed the congregation with knowledge and understanding.

Concluding Bibliography and a Suggestion for Encouraging Pastors

Buying Books for Pastors

The point: Encourage your pastor by getting together at Christmas, anniversary, or birthday times to buy him books.

Martin suggests that church members can encourage their pastors by pooling resources to buy them books for Christmas, anniversaries, or birthdays, recognizing that pastors often have limited funds for such purchases.

That will encourage the heart of a true shepherd of Christ. Some of you get together at Christmas time, anniversary times, birthday times, and buy your pastor books. If he's a shepherd after Christ's heart, he is committed to feeding you with knowledge and understanding. But he also has to feed his kids and feed his car.

Deacons Establishing a Book Allowance

The point: Deacons should establish an annual book allowance for their pastor, ensuring the funds are used only for books that feed his soul so he can feed the people of God.

He proposes that deacons establish an annual book allowance for their pastor, ensuring the funds are used solely for books that will spiritually nourish the pastor and, by extension, the congregation.

The heart of a pastor, better yet, you deacons, come together and establish an annual book allowance. And get your pastor to vow that he will not spend one penny of that book allowance for any books, anything other than books, and for no books, but those that will truly feed his soul, that he in turn may feed you, the people of God. Now, I'm sure there are many other books on the atonement which many of you have found helpful. But these are proven commodities.
