“Evangelistic Passion”

Pastor Martin, in a sermon titled "Evangelistic Passion," urges men of God to cultivate and maintain a fervent zeal for evangelism. He recommends specific books and biographies as tools to stir up this passion, emphasizing that a heart truly set on the conversion of sinners will experience pain when conversions are not seen, which will manifest in the tone and content of ministry. Martin highlights works by Horatius Bonar, C.H. Spurgeon, Richard Baxter, and Gardner Spring, along with biographies of figures like George Whitefield and David Brainerd, as proven means to ignite and sustain evangelistic fervor.

Brainerd's Influence on Henry Martyn

Driving home: I've been amazed over the years to see how many people who've been eminently useful in the Church of Christ, trace their initial infusion of passion to reading the life of Brainerd.

Martin uses the example of Henry Martyn catching his evangelistic flame from reading the life of David Brainerd, and how Martyn then inspired many others, to illustrate the power of reading biographies of passionate evangelists.

And this is by no means an exhausted list, but these are those that are proven means. I've been amazed over the years to see how many people who've been eminently useful in the Church of Christ, trace their initial infusion of passion to reading the life of Brainerd. Henry Martin caught his flame from Brainerd, and in turn, many caught their fire from Henry Martin of India, or missionary to India, spelled M-A-R-T-Y-N.
