Isaiah 43:10-11 Here We Stand

Pastor Martin continues the third group of witnesses to Christ's deity by showing from Isaiah 43-45, Hosea 13:4, and Psalm 130 that salvation is exclusively Jehovah's work — there is no God but Jehovah and no Savior but Jehovah. He then gathers four lines of New Testament evidence that the name Savior, the activity of saving, the blessings of salvation, and the object of saving faith are all transferred to Jesus of Nazareth. The conclusion is inescapable: either Christ is an impostor undermining Jehovah's exclusive saviorhood, or He is Jehovah Himself manifested in flesh. The sermon applies this to the adequacy of His saving activity and the urgency of His saving entreaties.

Coining the word monosoterism

Driving home: They were not only to proclaim monotheism, one God identified as Jehovah. They were to proclaim one Savior, also identified as Jehovah.

Just as 'monotheism' means one God, Pastor Martin coins 'monosoterism' from the Greek soter (savior) to capture the Old Testament's insistence on one Savior — Jehovah and Jehovah alone.

There is but one true and living God. And I want to coin a word this morning. They were also to proclaim the truth of monosoterism. Soter, the Greek word for saved.

Pastor Martin pictures a lifelong synagogue Jew hearing Peter preach that Jesus is exalted as Prince and Savior — the very title reserved for Jehovah alone — and the shock that title would have produced.

And imagine what this sounded like on the ears of these Jews. Steeped in the knowledge of the Old Testament. Peter is preaching concerning Jesus of Nazareth. And he says that you people have slain him.

Application 1: Adequacy of His Saving Work

The point: Trust the adequacy of Christ's saving work — only a fully divine Savior is sufficient for the magnitude of your sin and the multitude of the redeemed.

Even an archangel would be wearied by the dimensions of one sinner's salvation, let alone the multitude no man can number — only a divine Savior is up to the task.

The point: Recover gospel preaching that includes the words 'wrath' and 'fury' alongside the invitation of mercy.

Mocking the modern altar-call language ('Let Jesus have His way in your heart, allow the Son of God to give your life with a capital L'), Pastor Martin labels it rubbish — no gospel because it strips Christ of his divine authority to command.

The point: Test your conversion in the present tense — is Christ saving you today from pride, covetousness, lust, and self-will?

The only proof that Christ ever began saving you is that he is continuing to save you right now — like the proof you ever started a journey is that you are still on the road.

No, I said, is he doing? Present tense. The only proof that Jesus Christ ever began to do anything in you in a saving way is that he's continuing to do it right now. He that hath begun a good work in you will perform it until, not at, start it and then leave it and let you run around like a bunch of wild carnal goats and then go home with the sheep at the end day.
