Secondary Factors in Repentance of Ninevites

Jonah 3:5-9 Jonah

Pastor Martin expounds Jonah 3:5-9, focusing on the 'secondary factors' in the Ninevites' repentance: the predominance of fear, the role of human authority, and external disruptions. He argues that while these are not the essential elements of repentance, they are vital biblical illustrations. Martin applies these principles to contemporary audiences, challenging unbelievers on their lack of fear of God's wrath, parents and leaders on their responsibility to exercise authority for righteousness, and all to reorder priorities in earnest pursuit of God.

The Predominance of Fear in Repentance

Willowbrook Mall Bomb Threat

Driving home: The Word of God says, and I quote John 3.36, The wrath of God abides on him that believes not.

This analogy describes a man announcing a bomb in a mall, causing most to flee in fear, while two chess players remain, disbelieving. It illustrates how unbelief in God's warnings leads to a lack of holy dread, despite imminent danger.

And the absence of any holy dread or terror is the mute but inescapable evidence that you do not believe. Let me illustrate. Many of you have been over to the Willowbrook Mall. And there you have seen some of the little amusement centers where you can go in and play air hockey and pinball machines and all other kinds of things.
