Proverbs 25:9, 10

Proverbs 25:9-10 Proverbs

Pastor Martin expounds Proverbs 25:9-10, emphasizing the critical importance of discretion and the ability to keep a secret. He argues that a reputation for being a 'blabbermouth' is easily acquired but almost impossible to shed, leading to infamy and a lack of meaningful relationships. Martin illustrates this with a vivid example of a public leader losing his reputation due to a single moral indiscretion, underscoring that Solomon's wisdom deals with the harsh realities of how society perceives character. The sermon concludes with a strong admonition to parents to diligently teach their children the value of discretion and the severe consequences of gossip.

The Irreversible Loss of Reputation

Public Leader's Moral Indiscretion

Driving home: But let it be known that one day, one time, he sat his secretary on his knee and fondled her breast, and he's had it for the rest of his life.

Martin describes a public leader who maintains integrity for 30 years but loses his reputation permanently due to a single act of fondling his secretary. This illustrates how easily a good reputation is lost and how difficult it is to regain, especially in matters of moral integrity.

And once lost in a given area, it is difficult ever to be regained. Now we see that. With respect to public leaders and their morals, a man may walk with integrity and not a legitimate shadow be cast over his life and his sexual moral integrity with regard to women for 30 years. But let it be known that one day, one time, he sat his secretary on his knee and fondled her breast, and he's had it for the rest of his life.
