Not Everyone that Says Lord Lord, Part 2

In the second part of his sermon on Matthew 7:21-23, Pastor Martin warns against spiritual self-deception, emphasizing that not everyone who professes 'Lord, Lord' will enter the Kingdom of Heaven. He identifies two primary causes of this delusion: a false doctrine of assurance of salvation, which relies solely on a past profession or subjective feelings rather than the fruit of a changed life, and a failure to perform the duty of self-examination. Martin exhorts his hearers to diligently examine their lives against biblical tests of genuine faith, lest they be among the 'many' who will be tragically unmasked on the Day of Judgment.

Doctor's Warning of Disease

The point: Do not put a cheap price tag on your soul; give undivided attention and earnest mental activity to God's word to know the symptoms of self-deception and avoid the disease.

Martin uses the analogy of a doctor warning a community about a deadly disease to impress upon the hearers the gravity of spiritual self-deception and the importance of listening to the symptoms and remedies.

If a doctor were to come this morning and ask me to step aside, that he had a very sobering announcement to make to this people, if he were to stand up and face you with sobriety of countenance and with earnestness in his voice and say that many people in the community of the four-legged people, the four-legged people, the four-legged people, the four-legged people, the four-legged people, the four-legged people of Caldwell, West Caldwell, North Caldwell and Fairfield, many within the next six months are going to die of a terrible disease.

Jews' False Assurance

The point: If your assurance is based solely on believing a text without discerning the fruits of faith in your life, you are in grave danger.

Martin uses the example of the Jews in Jesus' day, who rested their assurance on being 'Abraham's seed' rather than on the works and faith of Abraham, to illustrate a false doctrine of assurance.

I never knew you're in grave danger you see this was the great problem of the Jews in our Lord's day they had a doctrine of false assurance they had a doctrine he began to talk to them in Romans chapter 8 about true spiritual experience he said in verse 32 to those Jews that believed on him if ye continue in my word then are ye my disciples indeed and you'll know the truth and the truth will liberate you and they said oh wait a minute now we don't mind being helped by the truth but the word liberation means bondage we don't have that evaluation of ourselves we've got a few problems but bondage...

John Bunyan's Ignorance

The point: Do not come to judgment self-deceived by resting on a false doctrine of assurance; seek an assurance based on a reflection of biblical Christian characteristics in your life.

Martin quotes John Bunyan's 'Pilgrim's Progress,' specifically the dialogue between Christian, Hopeful, and Ignorance, to vividly portray someone whose assurance is based solely on his own heart's testimony, devoid of biblical evidence.

that a young girl could even talk that way she said I'm 14 years of age I was saved notice past tense I was saved but since that time I've had sexual experience with 36 fellas I've got a problem can you help me what a pathetic thing that the church should spawn a youngster like that and say I was saved and living the life of a 14 year old adult read this right on your power don't read it now but you're able to go home why what she means is sometime in the past I prayed a little prayer and I professed to stay myself upon the God of Israel that's what she means but she doesn't mean what the Bibl...

Reasons for Neglecting Self-Examination and a Plea for Diligence

Mobile Chest X-ray Unit

The point: Dedicate at least an hour on the Lord's Day to prayer and self-examination, putting aside distractions, to seek God's face regarding your spiritual state.

Martin uses the analogy of a mobile chest x-ray unit coming to a community to explain why people fail to perform self-examination: ignorance, carelessness, or deliberate refusal to avoid a negative diagnosis.

here's one of the reasons they thought themselves too big for the duty of self examination why when we mention the name of Christ we've seen devils come out we must be his when we preach we're conscious of the divine anointing as we prophesy we're beyond examining ourselves and so feeling that they were exempt of the duty they went to the judgment to see , doesn't that shock you dear one? how can you sit there this morning without feeling God forgive me I've trifled with my soul now this is not some play acting many will say the reason many will come to see because they have not embraced the d...
