The Benevolent Man and the Pauper
In this part of the sermon: Martin illustrates God's work with an analogy of a wealthy, benevolent man transforming a pauper. First, the man cancels the pauper's debts, cuts his chains, and cleanses him…
A wealthy, kind man encounters a pauper in squalor, disease, debt, and chains. He first cleanses him, cuts his chains, cancels debts, and secures acquittal (neutralization). Then, he credits him with wealth, provides a wardrobe, restores health, and adopts him as an heir (conferral of opposites). This illustrates how God's grace not only removes the miseries of sin but bestows the exact opposite, demonstrating 'exceeding riches of grace.'
Let me illustrate it this way. Imagine in your mind's eye a wealthy man. A kind man. A benevolent man.
