Four Things the Gospel Does

menu_book More on 1 Thessalonians lightbulb 7 illustrations in this sermon

Pastor Albert N. Martin expounds 1 Thessalonians 1:1-10, answering the question: 'Has the gospel come to you in word only, or in power?' He argues that when the gospel comes in power, it produces four things: a radical conversion (a decisive turning from idols to serve the living God and to wait for Christ's return), the implantation of fundamental Christian graces (faith, hope, love, and joy), the beginning of a Christ-shaped life, and the creation of a gospel-proclaiming and gospel-affirming community. Martin urges listeners to self-examine whether these evidences are present in their lives, emphasizing that true conversion involves a glad submission to Christ as Lord.

“Has the gospel come to you in word only, or has it come to you in power, in the Holy Spirit, and in much conviction or assurance?”
“If the gospel has come to me in power and not in word only, it will have effected in me precisely what it effected in the life of the Thessalonians.”
“The first thing it does is it produces a radical conversion. ... That's a description of a, radical conversion.”
“He died to get us turned around. So that face and heart and whole of our being is God's Word.”
“I believe the Apostle is going to the heart of the issue that every sinner has within his own body compressed an idol factory and the idol most frequently manufactured is the one you see when you look in the mirror.”
“Calvin said very perceptively only the person who has learned to put himself wholly in subjection to God is truly converted to God”
“Without this turning and serving and waiting, we can scarcely have a biblical claim to have been converted.”

Applications

Believers

  • Do not let go of the gospel's power and its effects, lest the church become 'Ichabod' and just another religious club.

Parents & families

  • Don't be satisfied with a reasonably decent life propped up by parents' do's and don'ts or the comfort of association; seek genuine conversion.
  • Ask yourself: Is Christ the pearl of great price to me? Have I in my heart sold everything to have Him? Am I prepared to go anywhere, be anything, bear anything to please my Savior?

All listeners

  • Ask yourself: Has the gospel come to you in word only, or in power, in the Holy Spirit, and in much conviction or assurance?
  • Hold up this chapter as a mirror and ask, 'Do I see me in that mirror?' to determine if the gospel has come in power.
  • Examine if your life reflects a loving servitude to God as a bondslave, touching your remote control, your mouth, your computer, and all your actions.
  • Consider if you have a passion to serve Christ at home and abroad, demonstrating a decisive submitting to God's will for your life.
  • Seriously question if the gospel has come to you in power if the described radical conversion (turning, submitting, re-orienting) is not a mirror image of your experience.
  • Cultivate, nourish, and seek to act consistently with the implanted graces of faith, hope, love, and joy.
  • Be ever so careful and do not accept a mere lip parroting of the word of the gospel; look for evidence that the gospel has come in its power.
  • Don't be satisfied with anything less than the radical conversion, implanted graces, Christ-shaped life, and gospel-proclaiming community that the gospel in power produces.
