Pastor Albert N. Martin expounds Luke 18:9-14, the parable of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector, to address the most important question: 'How can sinful men and women be made right with the living, holy God of the Bible?' He contrasts the self-righteous delusion of the Pharisee with the brokenhearted humility of the tax collector, demonstrating that justification comes not through self-exaltation or religious performance, but through a humble, self-deprecating plea for God's propitious mercy based on Christ's sacrifice. Martin applies this truth by urging listeners to recognize their true sinful condition and to seek acceptance with God solely through Christ, rather than relying on their own perceived goodness or religious efforts.

“In other words, this was sanctified picking on people with preaching. And there are people who don't like to be picked on. “Accepting God's declaration. Concerning what we are. As sinners. Accepting God's provision for sinners. In the appointed sacrifice. By which he turns away. His wrath. Not preening ourselves. Not trying to bring to God. Brownie points. Which will somehow count. In the court of heaven.”

Applications

Parents & families

  • Do not be a 'perfect little Pharisee' by comparing yourself favorably to others; instead, recognize your own sinfulness despite outward morality.
  • When you see others in gross sin, go into your bedroom and thank God for His restraining grace and for changing you, acknowledging you would be worse without Him.
  • Take your place as a publican, crying out 'God, mercy to me, I'm the sinner Lord,' even with all your restraints and benefits.

All listeners

  • Ask the most important question: 'How can I be made right with the living holy God of the Bible?'
  • Sit under preaching that has arrows that go to your own heart, allowing truth to confront your conscience.
  • Know who and what you really are as a sinner, rather than being in the 'land of the blind' about your true condition.
  • Go to Dr. Jesus when you see what you are, rather than remaining 'whole in your own eyes.'
  • Stop trying to pile up 'brownie points' with God through conviction or faithfulness; go to God as a sinner, pleading for mercy for Jesus' sake.
  • Go out of yourself and into Christ, bringing nothing in your hands but clinging only to His cross for acceptance.
  • Seek God in Christ alone to assure your acceptance, rather than seeking Him outside of Christ, which only disgusts Him.
  • Identify which side of the frame you fit: the self-deluded Pharisee or the self-deprecating publican.
  • For those who have never owned what they are and gone out of themselves to Christ, may this be the day the Lord's voice finds and draws them.
  • For those who have been brought to take the place of the publican, never forget that is where you stand today, acknowledging no righteousness of your own and desiring to be found in Christ.
