Matthew 2:1-12

Worship of the Magi

menu_book More on Matthew lightbulb 7 illustrations in this sermon

Pastor Martin expounds Matthew 2:1-12, focusing on the worship of the Magi as a model for recognizing Jesus as King of the Jews, recipient of Gentiles, and worthy of highest homage. He contrasts this with the fearful opposition of Herod and the religious indifference of the scribes and priests. The sermon applies these truths by urging listeners to respond to Christ with inward spiritual passion, guided by the Holy Spirit, God's providential dealings, and His Word, lest they face judgment like Herod or rejection like the scribes.

Applications

All listeners

  • Recognize that God delights in bypassing human curiosity and focusing on what truly matters: what you see in Jesus and what you do when guided to Him.
  • See Jesus as the King of the Jews, the Savior of the world who welcomes Gentiles, and as infinitely worthy of the highest expressions of love, trust, and homage.
  • Understand that guidance to Jesus involves an inward pressure of the Spirit, a genuine spiritual passion to find and worship Him.
  • Recognize that God guides people to Jesus through external means: miraculous providence (like the star) and the specific, objective Word of God.
  • If your posture is like the Magi, bent in spirit and attitude, pouring out trust and love, then you are on the right path to Christ.
  • You will never come to the feet of the Savior until the Spirit of God brings you to the place where nothing matters but a vital relationship to Him.
  • Do not be content with carnal self-contentment; recognize your spiritual sickness and need for Christ, the divine physician.
  • Do not resist God's influence that brings you to Christ; conviction of sin is God enabling you to own your true, guilty condition.
  • Embrace God's providences (trials, suffering, helpful people) and His Word as guides to Christ, as these are His ordained means.
  • Recognize if God is creating a thirst and hunger within you for something real in the spiritual realm, making you a 'twentieth-century Magi.'
  • Appreciate God's providences that continually point you to the Son of God, and above all, heed His Word calling you to repent and believe.
  • If you desire Christ, know that He is yours; if you do not desire Him or are insensitive to His Word and providences, He is not yours.
  • Recognize that by nature, you are like Herod, seeing Christ as a rival to your own throne, and face the reality that Christ will conquer you in grace or crush you in judgment.
  • If you have a working knowledge of the Scriptures but have not come to worship Christ, you risk joining the chief priests in their rejection.
  • Assume the posture of the Magi: lost in wonder, love, and praise at Christ's feet, acknowledging your need and gladly confessing Him as your life and salvation.
  • May God grant that you will be found among those who surround the throne and praise Him in loving obedience.
  • Pray that God's love, manifested in Christ's sacrifice, will conquer rebellion and pride, bringing some to bow at Jesus' feet.
  • Express your love, homage, and worship to Christ, offering the love of your heart and the intent to serve Him, knowing He receives you in your sin.
