Martin uses the example of a biker subculture in Daytona Beach to illustrate what a subculture is: a group with distinct standards, goals, and interests that set it apart from the mainstream culture.
It is a culture that, contrary to the overarching climate of the larger culture, it has its own distinct standards, its own distinct goals, and its own distinct interests. We have a biker's culture. I'm thinking of it these days because where my mother-in-law lives down in Florida, I've been there during the time when bikers by the thousands come in to Daytona Beach. And one look at a group of bikers, and you identify them immediately as a subculture.
