Theological Basis

layers Part 3 of 8 menu_book More on Galatians lightbulb 10 illustrations in this sermon

Pastor Albert N. Martin expounds on the theological basis of Christian liberty, primarily drawing from Galatians 4 and Romans 8. He identifies four pillars: the sonship of believers, their servitude to Christ, God's sovereignty over conscience, and the supremacy and sufficiency of Scripture. Martin argues that understanding these truths frees believers from man-made rules and traditions, enabling them to receive God's gifts with thanksgiving and live in loving submission to Christ, while warning against the abuse of liberty as a license to sin.

Key Quotes

“And any Christian who is ignorant of that liberty or who fails to live in the light of that liberty is despising something, dearly purchased.”
“For any outside party, be it an individual or an institution, to attempt to dictate to us would be an intolerable meddling with the domestic economy of God.”
“If you cannot say with some measure of delight, putting your name first, John, Mary, Harriet, Pete, whatever your name is, you're a slave of Jesus Christ. Then my friend, you don't need to hear a lecture on Christian liberty.”
“And almost every heresy is an attempt to pacify a screaming conscience.”
“If God has not forbidden anything, nobody has a right to go in and say, God, your standard in the scriptures is inadequate for the conscience of that son and that servant. I think he can serve you better if I write in a few rules of my own.”
“that principle that the church has power to institute or appoint anything or ceremony belonging to the worship of God, either as a matter or either as to matter or manner, lies at the bottom of all the horrible superstition and idolatry, of all the confusion, blood, persecution, and wars that have for so long a season spread themselves over the face of the Christian world.”
“If forgiveness and acceptance with God on the part of sinners is not preached in such a way that someone objects, that's dangerous doctrine. You're not preaching free grace.”
“Whereas a body of believers who lay hold of and live in the present enjoyment of the reality of their sonship, adopted, joined heirs with Christ, who consciously delight in the relationship of servitude, they gladly embrace the title and the reality the title conveys, bond slaves of Christ, believing that He is Lord of the conscience, and they want Him to exercise the Lordship, flooding in the light of His law day after day, refusing to let sinful man bring the darkness of his own opinions.”

Applications

Believers

  • As a church, continually ensure that you are not imposing upon the consciences of men any doctrine not explicitly taught in the Word of God.

All listeners

  • Do not be ignorant of or fail to live in the light of Christian liberty, as it is a dearly purchased possession.
  • Be able to articulate the basis of your liberty in Jesus Christ to others who are crippled by scruples.
  • Learn to look upon all of God's gifts as privileges to be used to God's glory, your profit, and your delight.
  • Receive God's gifts with thanksgiving and employ them to His glory, whether eating, drinking, or whatever you do.
  • Obey your Father in solemn bonds of love and filial delight, but obey no one else who would intrude into the household of God and bind your conscience.
  • Examine yourself to see if you are a loving bondslave of Jesus Christ; if not, you need to hear the gospel proclaiming liberty from sin's bondage.
  • As a bondslave of Christ, your concern should be to please and honor your Master, aiming for maximum productivity in bringing praise to Him, not to see how much you can 'get away with'.
  • Allow no other Lord to intrude over your conscience, remembering you were bought with a price and are Christ's servant.
  • Exercise your privileges as a son only so far as is consistent with your posture as a servant of Christ and righteousness.
  • Exercise yourself to always have a conscience void of offense toward God and man, humbling yourself to confess wrongs and keeping short accounts.
  • Never justify violating God's law by saying your conscience didn't bother you; instead, be obligated to know God's revealed will so your conscience is sensitive to it.
  • Search the Scriptures, cry to God for light on the path of duty, and pray that your conscience will be conformed to God's Word, smiting you where it ought and not being at peace where it shouldn't.
  • Remind yourselves that you are sons, not servants (in the sense of being bound by human rules), and school yourselves to ask if doctrines, forms of worship, and rules of conduct are from Scripture and from the Father.
  • If you have allowed your conscience to be dictated to by men and tradition, go home and ask God to purge from your conscience everything but the standard of His Holy Word.
  • Until God corrects your conscience, do not violate it by making a moral choice in the direction of what you believe to be evil.
  • Have mercy upon those who are still slaves of sin and draw them to fall at the feet of Christ in true brokenness and self-abandonment.
