In "Gleanings from the Olivet Discourse, Part 2," Pastor Albert N. Martin continues his exposition of Mark 13, focusing on the provisions God makes for His people during the inter-advental period and the certainties regarding Christ's second coming. He argues that despite demanding events and widespread opposition, believers are sustained by the grace of God, the indwelling Holy Spirit, and the throne of grace, emphasizing the necessity of prayer. Martin then highlights five clear and certain truths about the Second Advent, contrasting them with speculative interpretations, and concludes with a fervent call to perpetual readiness and a warning to unbelievers about the finality of judgment.

“if they are not eyes that have by faith seen beauty in Christ beauty that has vacuated your heart of its whorish attachment to the world thrown off the rings and symbols of marriage to this present age and caused your heart to be engaged in loving fidelity to Christ if the eyes that see him when he returns have not first of all seen him crucified as the only hope of sinners believing upon him to salvation if they are not eyes that have seen a beauty in him that has ravished the heart weaned it from the world my friend hear me”
“mark it down when the mind gets fascinated with dates it's usually because the heart is no longer fascinated with Christ and with holiness”

Applications

All listeners

  • Do not be paralyzed by fear, intimidated into silence, or diverted into secondary issues, but remain absorbed in proclaiming the gospel to the ends of the earth.
  • Find confidence in ministry knowing that God's elect will hear His voice and be brought into the fold, regardless of personal feebleness.
  • Do not be anxious beforehand about what to speak when facing opposition, but trust that the necessary grace will be given in that hour.
  • Be willing to put your job on the line for the sake of the gospel, trusting the Holy Spirit to provide the necessary courage.
  • Pray that demanding events, like the timing of a siege, be altered by God in answer to prayer, demonstrating trust in the throne of grace.
  • Recognize that each demand in God's will is a demand on His grace, and the Holy Spirit dwells in us to communicate every needed grace.
  • Frequent the throne of grace in ordinary days, not just in crisis, to build faith and effectiveness in prayer.
  • Pray and wrestle with God to develop effectiveness at the throne of grace, rather than just reading about prayer.
  • Take heed, watch, and pray to be kept in the way of holiness, responsible stewardship, and a heart permeated with the gospel, ensuring readiness for Christ's return.
  • Pray in the secret place to keep a 'white hot heart' for God amidst spiritual coldness, maintaining love for Christ, sensitivity to sin, and focus on His coming.
  • Do not give up praying, as neglecting the throne of grace is the first step towards apostasy.
  • Cling with a death grip to what is clear and certain about the second coming, avoiding speculative dabbling in unclear prophetic matters.
  • Embrace no doctrine of the second coming that offers hope for sinners beyond that coming; there is no second chance.
  • Do not deceive yourself into thinking there will be a second chance for repentance after Christ's return if you resist the gospel now.
  • Do not dabble in literature, tapes, or radio programs that profess to be wiser than Jesus regarding the timing of His return.
  • Live each day in principled obedience to the word of God, in dependence upon the Spirit, and in communion with the Son, as this is true readiness for His return.
  • For mothers and housewives, readiness means diligently fulfilling God-given duties at home, not abandoning them for heroic acts.
  • Fly to Christ now, asking God for eyes to behold His beauty, trustworthiness, and the sufficiency of His work for sinners, to avoid facing Him with terror.
  • Never let the central truths of the cross get out of your sight, for strength and growth come from staying near the cross.
