Pastor Martin opens his treatment of the doctrine of justification by underscoring its supreme importance. After showing that the doctrine answers the most fundamental of human questions, 'How shall sinful man find acceptance with God?', he argues for its importance on two grounds: the glory of God, since in justifying the ungodly God displays the brilliance of every divine attribute, and the good of the creature, both for the conversion of sinners and the establishing peace, holiness, and joy in believers.

Applications

Believers

  • When you sin, run immediately to the truth of justification by faith rather than to your feelings - dim views here will keep you in bondage.

The unconverted

  • Unconverted hearers cannot afford to ignore this doctrine - it is the only way out from under God's canopy of judgment.

All listeners

  • Christians who long to bring God maximum glory cannot do so without understanding and articulating the doctrine of justification - praise must flow along the channels of understanding.
  • Students and preachers must grasp justification clearly because the great end of the gospel is to declare God's glory; dim views here mean a dim glory.
  • Church members should beat a path to the elders demanding justification be sounded from the pulpit if it goes silent - the doctrine must remain central.
  • If you lack zeal, holy joy, and sacrificial service, ask whether the absence of a clear grasp on justification is the root cause.
  • Believers under counseling pressure should immerse themselves in the book of Romans and concentrated study on justification to find solid ground.
