Pastor Albert N. Martin expounds Galatians 4:4-6 and Romans 8:15-16, demonstrating that every believer, upon adoption into God's family, receives the Holy Spirit as the Spirit of adoption. This Spirit enables believers to cry "Abba, Father," fostering an intimate, filial relationship with God. Martin emphasizes that this witness of the Spirit is always conjoined with the witness of our own spirit, evidenced by a life of holiness and love for Christ, and warns against grieving the Spirit through ethical controversies.

Key Quotes

“So adoption is distinct but never separate from justification.”
“In other words, Christ was sent when He was sent, how He was sent, that He might effect a redemption, that when it is applied, would bring the redeemed into the experience of being sons of God.”
“when the Scripture says the Spirit is sent into our hearts crying, Abba, Father, we know that He is giving us the ability to address God. In the very language with which the Son of God Himself addressed His Father.”
“I need a Savior on a cross to save me. I need the Spirit in my heart to enable me to embrace the wonder and the privilege of that salvation.”
“Put it bluntly, sitting here this morning, if the Holy Spirit is not superintending your life, leading it more and more, into a life of conformity to Jesus Christ, putting to death the deeds of the body, the deeds of the flesh, you have no grounds to say you're a child of God.”
“The witness of the Spirit then is to be found in His hidden ministrations by which the filial Spirit, the Spirit in disposition of coming to God as our Father, is created in our hearts and comes to birth in this joyful cry.”
“The Holy Spirit bearing witness with your spirit that you are a child of God.”
“You cannot have a bright, powerful, present witnessing of the Spirit of God with your spirit to your sonship, giving you liberty in prayer, enabling you to cry, Abba, Father, if you're grieving and quenching the Holy Spirit by ethical controversies with God.”

Applications

All listeners

  • Examine your life to see if the Holy Spirit is superintending it, leading you into conformity to Christ and putting to death the deeds of the body, as this is the ground for claiming to be a child of God.
  • Examine yourself by the Bible to determine if your spirit affirms you are a child of God, looking for marks like loving Christ supremely, hating all sin, and being led by the Spirit in progressive holiness.
  • If your conscience does not testify to sincerity, hatred of sin, and love for the brethren, then the Spirit of God will not witness peace or comfort to your soul.
  • Do not rely on a supposed 'witness of the Holy Spirit' if your own spirit does not bear witness to the marks and fruits of grace according to the Word of God, lest you be under a spirit of delusion.
  • For those with indications of being a child of God, embrace the Holy Spirit as the Spirit of adoption, enabling you to cry 'Abba, Father,' as God's witness to your genuine sonship.
  • Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God by corrupt speech, bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, railing, or malice, as this restrains His ministry and diminishes His witness to your sonship.
  • If you are grieving the Holy Spirit through ethical controversies, stop rationalizing, own the sin, ask God's forgiveness, go to the fountain open for sin, and ask for a fresh infilling and empowering of His Spirit to restore liberty and freedom in prayer.
  • If you do not have the testimony of your own spirit that you are a child of God, repent of your sin and believe on the Lord Jesus Christ to receive justification, adoption, and the Spirit of adoption.
  • Jealously guard your own hearts lest you grieve or quench the Spirit and cut the living nerve of liberty and freedom of access to God as your Father.
