The Unpardonable Sin

Pastor Albert N. Martin expounds Mark 3:28-30, focusing on the solemn declaration and warning concerning the unpardonable sin. He begins by affirming the glorious truth that all manner of sins and blasphemies can be forgiven through Christ, conditioned on repentance and faith. He then addresses the frightening exception of blasphemy against the Holy Spirit, which he tentatively identifies as a sin specific to the context of Christ's direct miraculous attestation, leading to an eternal sin due to an irreversible hardening of the heart. Martin applies this by demolishing notions of universal salvation or unconditional forgiveness, urging listeners to immediate, unreserved yieldedness to Christ to avoid the precipice of spiritual ruin.

“When our Lord says verily or Amen I say unto you the use of the word Amen or verily or truly is pointing in the direction of the absolute truthfulness and trustworthiness of what He is about to speak. In other words, this word is the seal of Christ upon the truth of that which He is about to say.”

Applications

Believers

  • The church must not be filled with unholy and impenitent people due to a catechism of unconditional love; church discipline is an expression of god-likeness, holding at a distance those who cling to their sins.

All listeners

  • Do not make a one-to-one leap from Jesus' words to the scribes to yourself without first understanding what it meant to them in the original setting.
  • If you leave here unforgiven, uncleansed, unpardoned, it will be due to wicked, horrible, damning unbelief that will not credit the testimony of Jesus.
  • Do not let anyone trifle with your soul by suggesting there is no hell, or that you will be annihilated, or that all sinners will ultimately be restored without Christ's blood and the Spirit's work.
  • Do not absolve yourself and say all is well with God unless you are prepared to repent, cutting off and plucking out even your dearest sins. Repentance is not mere whimpering but an inward resolution to be done with sin and step into obedience.
  • In relationships, if a brother (husband, wife, son, daughter) sins against you, you are not obligated to confer forgiveness until they repent and seek your forgiveness, though you must extend forgiveness in your spirit.
  • To be certain you never commit blasphemy against the Holy Spirit or its kindred sins of gradual heart hardening, the only safe place is present, immediate, unreserved yieldedness to Jesus Christ and all His claims.
  • Do not dabble with sin, carnality, or unresolved conflicts, wondering how close you can get to the precipice. The safest place is as far from the precipice as the width of the road allows, pressed up against Jesus.
  • Run to Christ, run to the fountain open for sin and uncleanness, for all manner of sins and blasphemies shall be forgiven.
  • Do not trifle with your soul; you cannot repent at your leisure. Repent when God, by the Spirit, is bringing the word home to your conscience.
