In "Christian Liberty #02," Pastor Albert N. Martin expounds on John 8:31-36 and Romans 6-8, laying the foundational pillars of Christian liberty. He argues that true freedom is found only in Christ, contrasting our natural bondage in Adam with our real liberty in Christ. Martin details three aspects of this liberty: freedom from the law's condemning power, freedom from its sin-provoking influence, and freedom from sin's enslaving power. He challenges listeners, especially young people, to examine whether they truly experience this profound liberation, warning against a superficial understanding of Christian liberty that leads to worldliness.

Key Quotes

“It is not the truth that liberates, but he says, If, therefore, the Son shall make you free, you shall be free indeed.”
“Nothing is more pathetic than people who have never known the reality of their condition of slavery and bondage in Adam to be talking about Christian liberty when it comes to some of the other things that are going on in the world.”
“Here and now, in the present moment, for the one who is in Christ, get hold of this, as far as God dealing with you in righteousness with respect to your sins, past, present, and future, the day of judgment has come and gone.”
“The reality of present justification in Christ by faith alone is the cornerstone of true Christian liberty. And rather than lead to license and to carelessness and to covering all, all forms of worldliness with the tag Christian liberty, it is the soul set free from the condemning power of the law that is free to love God and love its neighbor in evangelical law-keeping of the strictest kind, of the most self-denying kind, far beyond anything possible by those who are still seeking to earn their acceptance with God, by their own performance.”
“The baseline disposition of a person who is yet in the flesh, in Adam, who is not in the Spirit, in Christ, is enmity against God. In other words, I want to do my own thing. I don't care what God's thing is. I want my own way.”
“There's not a free man or woman in this place this morning. You're somebody's slave.”
“And it's sickening. And it'll be death to our churches. In the days to come.”
“Oh, my friend, go to Christ because he said, Whom the Son sets free is free indeed. You go to him and say, Lord Jesus, I've got the chains on me.”

  • Live out the blessed liberty of being set free from the condemning power of the law, loving God and neighbor in evangelical law-keeping.
  • Do not talk about Christian liberty in matters indifferent (Romans 14) unless Romans 6 is true of you, meaning you are truly freed from sin's enslaving power.

  • Do not talk about Christian liberty in movies, dress, music, or entertainment until you have been liberated from servitude to sin and made the joyful bond-slave of righteousness and of God.
  • As a slave of righteousness, ask 'what's right with it?' and 'what good will it do?' regarding choices, rather than 'what's wrong with it?' or 'what harm will it do?'
  • Examine yourself: Are you truly free from the condemning power of the law, the sin-provoking power of the law, and the enslaving power of sin?
  • If you are still in chains, go to Christ and ask Him to set you free, trusting His promise that 'Whom the Son sets free is free indeed.'
  • Pray for instruction so that your thinking about liberty is founded on these great realities, guiding your choices in 'things indifferent' as a free man/woman in Christ.
