Pastor Albert N. Martin continues his series on Christian Liberty, focusing on the nature of true freedom in Christ. Expounding primarily from John 8:31-36, Galatians 5:1, and Acts 26:16-18, he argues that genuine liberty in Christ entails being set free from the enslaving powers of the devil, the world, and self-worship. Martin challenges listeners to examine whether their lives truly reflect this liberation, particularly in their resistance to worldliness and self-centeredness, urging unbelievers and young people to seek Christ for true freedom.

Key Quotes

“It is useless to talk about Christian liberty. With respect to the things that we call things indifferent. Matters concerning which the Bible gives neither commands. Nor prohibitions.”

“No one, in any position, in any place, at any time, under any circumstances, ever receives forgiveness of sins and a place among God's believing people until, first of all, eyes are opened to spiritual reality... and they turn. There is a place, there is a radical shift of turning from the power of Satan unto God.”
“But that's my Christian liberty. That's not your liberty, that's your chain. That's your chain that says the world has your power. Don't call it your liberty. It's your chain.”

“Do you have liberty to be God's enemy? Do you have liberty to be God's enemy where do you find that liberty held out in the Scriptures if you're a child of God you're a child of God you're to be passionate about being the friend of God”
“I'm free to be a slave you see as long as I'm living for myself I don't care two hoots about whether what I do breeds you makes you happy offends you helps you on your way to heaven or hinders you I want to please myself it's my liberty”
“The day this church holds the form of godliness in its external activities and in its doctrinal purity but harbors self-centered, self-indulgent people who parade their selfhood under the guise of Christian liberty is all over. The power will be gone. Why? Because true, vital religion is gone.”

Applications

Parents & families

  • If you feel constrained by parents living in Christian liberty, recognize that you are in chains and are to be pitied, and seek Christ for true freedom.
  • Go to the Lord Jesus and ask Him to set you free from being uptight with what your peers think, and from the tyranny of the world and self.

All listeners

  • Understand two foundational biblical truths: the nature of our real bondage and slavery in Adam, and the nature of our real freedom and liberty in Christ, before discussing 'things indifferent'.
  • Recognize that if you are in Christ, you are truly free from the condemning power of the law, the sin-provoking power of the law, and the enslaving power and lordship of sin, even if you don't always live in light of it.
  • Come to grips with the reality of your chains and the desperation of being in them, so you might see the glimmer of light in the word of Jesus.
  • Examine if your eyes have been spiritually opened to see spiritual realities and if you have truly turned from the power of Satan unto God.
  • Be watchful, as your adversary the devil still walks about seeking whom he may swallow down, even though you are delivered from his governing power.
  • Do not call crass worldliness 'Christian liberty,' but recognize it as a chain that binds you to the world's power.
  • Exercise your freedom in Christ to trample over your lusts and desires and the world's perceived importance, rather than being bound by them.
  • Be transformed by the renewing of your mind, proving the good, acceptable, and perfect will of God, rather than being conformed to this age.
  • Frame every facet of your life from Monday through Saturday by the revealed will of God in Holy Scripture, rather than drifting along with the world's system.
  • Be passionate about being a friend of God, determined to stand against every form of worldliness from the inside out, rather than being a friend of the world and an enemy of God.
  • Guard your heart from the incursions of the world through constant watchfulness and resolute determination to lay hold of God's grace.
  • Live no longer unto yourselves, but unto Christ who died and rose again for your sakes, loving God and your neighbor above yourself.
  • Use your freedom in Christ to be slaves one to another through love, willingly making yourself a slave for Christ's sake to help others on their way to heaven.
  • Measure your life not by the full extent of your liberties, but by the full extent to which you can build up others, not seeking your own profit but the profit of many.
  • Deny yourself, as Christ commanded, as the first requirement of discipleship, losing your life to save it.
  • Rejoice in your freedom in Christ and let your Master, God and Savior, call the shots in your life, not the world.
  • Lay up treasure in heaven and seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, rather than being swayed by the world's standards for financial security.
